Remember the guy who inspired Jim Calhoun's "Not A Dime Back" rant?
His name was Ken Krayeske. And, like all good muckrakers, he's got a blog. In the above link, he uses the Freedom of Information Act to dig into the recruiting expenses at both UConn and North Carolina during the 2008 season.
His conclusions: both teams spent too much money on recruiting (and assorted perks, like taxpayer-provided limo rides and meals), and college basketball coaches get paid too much (the function of players being ineligible to earn wages as an 'amateur'). So obviously, nothing's really changed since that wondrous afternoon in February 2009.
All in all, it's a bit tiresome and predictable as an exercise in outrage; as investigative journalism, at least, it's interesting to see the actual numbers (UConn coaches with a recruiting license spent $220,000 in 2008).
With that out of the way, a brief rant:
Without Jim Calhoun, I (and thousands of others) wouldn't even have considered paying the state of Connecticut (through its flagship university) $25,000 a year for four years. Without Jim Calhoun, there is no 10,000-seat moneymaking arena on campus, nor would there have been UConn2000 or 21st Century UConn fundraising projects. He should be paid more, and frankly, any perks he wants, he ought to get.
Thank you.

Absolutely spot on. It would be outrageous if, ya know, the univeristy wasn’t making millions and millions on its basketball program.
I can’t believe this guy actually made me sympathize with Jim Calhoun. And I just threw up on myself.
The "millions and millions" thing is not exactly true . . .

But, if Connecticut is willing to spend and sees returns like Meacham enrolling, more power to the school.
I could care less, though. The only thing that I really like is that Krayeske is a Syracuse graduate. WE’RE EVERYWHERE IMPOSING OUR AGENDA!
Please.
Considering Boeheim makes as much as, if not a lot more than Calhoun (likely), stop. Plus, your coach is guilty for leading the death march towards a 96-team tournament. That is an unforgivable offense that will destroy college basketball, one that Boeheim will never live down and is totally indefensible.
Calhoun at least had the balls to call the move out for what it is: coaches trying to save their own asses. Boeheim was too busy kissing them to care about killing his own sport.
Go see if your assistants have written another shitty rap song or figured out another way to get run off the court in the Sweet 16.
Salary Clarification
Boeheim makes $1.55 million. Calhoun makes $1.6 million.
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/mensbasketball/2010-coaches-salary-database.htm
The differences:
1. Calhoun makes $50K more a year.
2. Boeheim is trying to destroy everything great about the NCAA Tournament.
You're missing the point (and meandered on an odd tangent), but that's OK.
As I noted, it’s your school; I don’t particularly care what Connecticut does. If you can reconcile the facts and accept the balance, then more power to you.
I only provided the foundation: Connecticut’s net margin for the period was about $1.2M. Whatever you want to do with the information is your own business. For contrasting purposes, I also provided that Syracuse’s net margin for the period was $9.1M.
This has little to do with Boeheim-Calhoun or Syracuse-Connecticut. These are your tuition and tax dollars. You take the information and do with it what you please (which, given your comments, appears to be “ignore”).
Yeah, Well
I never believed that Pitt could continue to crap the bed during the second week of the tournament, but lo and behold they continue to surprise me.
(Now I’m just taking gratuitous shots, I know)
They usually wait until the Sweet 16 to crap the bed now. I’m looking forward to the day when they start crapping the bed in the Final Four, but that might be a few years away.
