Jasper Howard R.I.P.

howardHorrible news out of Storrs this morning as it appears UConn cornerback Jasper Howard was stabbed and killed on campus last night. Howard, who was from Miami, was 20 years old.

It appears the stabbing took place very early this morning after an argument on campus. Police are still searching for a suspect, we'll update as any additional information gets released.

UPDATE (12:42 p.m.) -- We're learning more and more about what happened last night, with various news outlets reporting that Howard was stabbed outside the Student Union (in the heart of UConn's campus) at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Students at a school-sponsored dance were evacuating the Student Union after a fire alarm was pulled, according to police. An altercation broke out outside the building, where Howard and another person were stabbed. Police said the unknown second victim was treated and released from a local hospital.

According to the updated Courant story linked above, Howard had a tough childhood growing up in Miami. He was the first in his family to attend college, and his dream was to make the NFL to support his single mother financially, the Courant reported.

I don't have the words to describe this shocking, heartbreaking tragedy. The UConn community grieves, and we all send our deepest prayers and sympathies to the Howard family.

This world doesn't make much sense on a good day. Today, it makes no sense.

I know it’s a cliche to say that moments like these put the game into its proper perspective, but it’s true.
Everyone down here in New Jersey who roots hard for Rutgers football (and against opposing players when they are on the field) has nothing but prayers and all our best wishes for Jasper Howard’s family and the UConn family on this terrible morning.
I don’t know what else to say except that we’re thinking of you.
